Manchester United legend Eric Cantona has recently revealed how he was denied the role of becoming the President of the club by Ed Woodward. During the course of his career, he has won four Premier League titles with the club and retired from the club in 1997. He presented his proposal after having a meeting with ex- executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward in 2021.
Woodward left the club last season after facing disapproval from fans and the management after a string of underwhelming transfer deals and managerial appointments. United is a club that has always been kind to their ex-players allowing them to come back and have several roles at the club like former manager Ole Gunner Solskjaer and current technical director Darren Fletcher among them.
Manchester United legend explains his meeting with Ed Woodward.
Cantona quoted how the meeting went last year to The Athletic saying, “Last year, I proposed to the club to change their way. Ed Woodward is great at marketing but not great at football. United should have a chairman and then they should have a president of marketing and then a president of football, who is in charge of all the decisions in football. So I proposed to them that I should be president of football.”
He added, “I met him a few times. But they did not accept it! I still think I or somebody else, should have somebody for football. It should be somebody from the club, who knows football and the club. So imagine if you succeed in football and have great people in marketing, then instead of doubling the revenue, you would treble it.”
