“This club has sinned in recent years”- Barcelona ‘doesn’t care about the people who made history for them, claims Dani Alves

Dani Alves is a free agent after a brief second stint at Barcelona. It was a happy but ultimately frustrating time and Alves’ desire is to find a new club so that he can represent his country in Qatar.

The 39-year-old defender returned to Barcelona in November 2021, five years after having left the club. Having signed as a free agent, the Brazilian had to wait for his second debut in January. Alves went on to feature 15 times in all competitions in the second half of the 2021/22 campaign, even contributing with a goal and three assists in all competitions.

The veteran defender had signed a short-term contract until June 2022 but had stated his intention to stay at Camp Nou beyond that term. Initially, it appeared that Barça would extend Alves’ contract until the end of the season. But, in the end, the Blaugrana chose the opposite path, releasing the 39-year-old when his contract expired.

Opening up about his second stint at Barcelona, Alves stated that he was not saddened by his departure but was dissatisfied with how the club handled his departure.

“I didn’t leave sad. I left happy to have returned to Barcelona. I dreamed for five years wanting to live this second moment. The only thing I didn’t like was how my departure was handled,” Alves said about his six months at the Camp Nou, which followed a turbulent stint at São Paulo.

“Since I arrived, I made it very clear that I wasn’t anymore a 20-year-old guy and that I wanted things to be done head-on, without hiding things. But this club has sinned in recent years. Barcelona don’t care about the people who made history for the club.”

Dani Alves went on to praise the current crop of players at Barcelona. He did, however, express his displeasure with the way things are being handled off the field and stated that something needed to change. “I found a club full of young people with incredible ideas on the pitch,” said Alves, who played 17 times for Barcelona in his second spell having featured 247 times during a trophy-laden eight-year first spell.

“But it needs to improve the work outside the field. The mindset is totally opposite to what we built a few years ago. Everything that happens on the field is a reflection of what happens outside. I’m supporting for Barcelona to come back to the top, but it’s super-complicated. Football is more balanced, it’s a collective game. And that has been left out at the club.”
