Tottenham Hotspurs are interested in signing Harvey Barnes and James Maddison’ from Leicester City as they look to raid the relegated Foxes but will face competition from Newcastle United for the highly-rated duo. It was a season to forget for both sides as Spurs dropped to eighth place, missing out on Europe as the Foxes were relegated on the final day of the season.
And while Leicester are now planning for the championship, some of their star players may be looking for the exit and a return to the top flight. It seems Spurs could provide an outlet for two of Leicester’s most valuable players, who have long been on their waiting list when the summer term arrives. According to reports, Tottenham will look to sign both Maddison and Barnes from Leicester in the coming months.
The Foxes are likely to demand a £40 million fee for both games, making them somewhat affordable for North London. It is likely that, with both Spurs and Newcastle interested, a bidding war could ensue driving the price of the respective player higher. It was reported earlier this week that Aston Villa and West Ham are among the clubs that are keen on Barnes’ services.
Champions to Championship: how slow-thinking Leicester sealed their own fate
Seven years on from winning the title, six on from competing with Atlético Madrid for a spot in the Champions League semi-finals, two on from winning the FA Cup and missing out on a top-four league finish on the final day, and 12 months on from another European adventure, Leicester are coming to terms with relegation. Their previous three league finishes read: fifth, fifth, eighth. And now 18th, two points shy of Everton, who stayed up on the final day at their expense.
Relegation breeds uncertainty but the squad is guaranteed to look very different when Leicester kick off in the second tier for the first time in 10 years. James Maddison is set to be sold amid serious interest from Newcastle, among others, and eight players’ contracts are up, including Youri Tielemans, Caglar Soyuncu and the club captain Jonny Evans, who has been stalked by injury this season.
Leicester, like Southampton, has discovered the cost of a couple of missteps. Recruitment has been flawed for a while. They have seen little return on the £60m outlay for Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumaré, Jannik Vestergaard, and Ryan Bertrand two years ago. Poor management and poor recruitment have seen the unthinkable happen to a club who have enjoyed a glorious decade.
