UEFA Euro Cup v UEFA Women’s Euro Cup: Which final attracted more fans?

England win the Women EURO

The largest attendance at either a men’s or women’s European Championship event was reached on Sunday with 87,192 fans watching England play Germany in the Euro 2022 championship game at Wembley.

Comparing this year’s competition in England to the last women’s European Championship five years ago, attendance has more than doubled.

The Lionesses’ 1-0 victory over Austria to kick off the competition in front of 69,000 spectators at Old Trafford broke the previous mark of 41,000. Chloe Kelly made sure she would always be hailed as a Lionesses legend as they watched England win a historic game in extra time in front of all those spectators. The hosts had taken the lead thanks to a beautifully executed lob from Ella Toone, but Lina Magull’s equalizer forced an additional 30 minutes.

Record Attendance at the Women EURO:

England scored the winner late in the game

The number of attendees broke the previous record established at the men’s tournament in 1964 when 79,115 people saw Spain play the Soviet Union in the championship match at Santiago Bernabeu.

The opening match between England and Austria at Old Trafford attracted a crowd of 68,781, making it the second time this summer alone that the Women’s European Championship record attendance has been beaten.

Before the final, there had been 487,683 spectators, which was more than twice the previous record for the women’s competition established five years prior when the Netherlands successfully hosted Euro 2017. When the final attendance is taken into account, Euro 2022 surpasses the 574,000 record for the overall number of fans who attended games during the tournament.

The 91,648 spectators that saw Barcelona play Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal match at Camp Nou in April 2022 still hold the record for the largest crowd ever to see a women’s football game.
