UEFA reveals 2022 season’s top 10 clubs in coefficient rankings

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup ending, all focus now turns to club competition and Europe’s premier competition i.e the UEFA Champions League. Group stages are done and dusted with PSG, Real Madrid, Manchester City and 13 more clubs competing to be crowned European champions in May. Now, UEFA has released their annual coefficient rankings for 2022 with usual names topping the list.

The results of every European club participating in UEFA club competition are used to determine the UEFA club coefficient rankings. The amount of entries a given league is given for upcoming seasons is based on the association club coefficient, which considers the results of all clubs from each league. The club coefficient rankings, which are used to determine a club’s seeding in the Europe competition draw, take into account each club’s performance in the UEFA club competition.

Manchester City tops the list with 131 points as they have consistently reached at least the quarterfinals stage in the last 4 editions. Bayern Munich had topped the list the previous year but have settled to 2nd place after disappointing defeat against Villareal in the quarterfinals last season. Liverpool and Chelsea share the third spot with 123 points as both have won the trophy once in the last five seasons.

Who are the next 6 clubs in the UEFA clubs’ coefficient rankings?

Real Madrid & Barcelona

Paris Sant-Germain are ranked fifth with 112 points as they reached the final in 2020 when they were defeated by Bayern. The most shocking and controversial position is the 6th place held by current European champions Real Madrid. Despite defeating Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool, teams occupying the higher positions, Los Blancos had not performed amicably in the earlier edition as per expectations.

Barcelona takes 7th spot as their miserable Champions League campaign of 2020-21 and 2021-22 which lead them to demotion in Europa League lead to their low score of 98 points. Manchester United jumped 1 spot to their 2021 tally with their Europa League runner up in 2021 helping their upper standing.

Juventus and Ajax conclude the top 10 spots. Juventus dropped one place as their on field antics have added to their financial misery. Ajax who are new entry in this top 10 list were eliminated in the group stage of 2022-23 campaign after being placed in a tough group alongside Napoli, Liverpool and Rangers.
