Ukraine formally appeals to ban Iran from the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Ukraine Football Association are trying hard to participate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Iran’s football team has been on the news for the past few weeks and is on the verge of facing a ban from the 2022 FIFA World Cup which is set to start next month. Ukraine is about to present a formal request to FIFA to throw Iran out of the World Cup for “possible involvement of Iran in the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine”.

Ukraine’s FA confirmed on Monday that their executive committee is working in order to take steps against Iran and wants them to be excluded from the tournament. Russia invaded Ukraine in February and registered a war against them after which FIFA and UEFA banned Russia from playing international football.

Ukraine played their qualification match late in June because of the country’s war with Russia but lost to Wales in the play-offs beaten with Gareth Bale’s sole goal. Sergei Palkin, CEO of Shakhtar Donetsk asked FIFA to remove Iran from the tournament and requested Ukraine to replace them.

What steps is Ukraine taking in order to ban Ukraine from the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

The statement read, “Taking into account media information about systematic human rights violations in Iran, which may violate the principles and norms of the FIFA Statutes, taking into account the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 regarding the imposition of sanctions on Iran and the possible involvement of Iran in the military aggression of Russia against Ukraine.”

Adding to it, “to make a request to the FIFA to consider excluding the Iranian national team from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.” Iran faces a tough group and will start their World Cup campaign against England on November 21 with the United States and Wales among the other teams in their group.
