Violent brawl erupts between Argentina and Mexico fans in Doha FIFA World Cup fanzone following El Tri supporters “F*** Messi” Chants
Argentina and Mexico
Fans of Argentina and Mexico are unquestionably the most numerous in Doha’s streets, where a minor altercation broke out on Wednesday night. The most noticeable sights in the Corniche area and FIFA Fanzone at Al Bidda Park in Doha are sky blue and white-clad Argentina fans and fans wearing green shirts. The general attitude in the Qatari capital is one of good humor as fans from all nations freely interact together.
However, tensions did reach a breaking point on Wednesday when, in a rare event, supporters of Argentina and Mexico exchanged blows just days before their respective teams were scheduled to face in a pivotal Group C match. Omar Nio, a Mexican journalist, recorded the unpleasant images as a small group of Mexico and Argentina fans sparred and chanted “Fuck Messi” as the outnumbered Argentina supporters fled the area.
A humiliating 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia has put Lionel Messi and Argentina’s chances of competing in the tournament in severe and unexpected jeopardy. Argentina must respond quickly against Mexico on Saturday, or else a humiliating early exit is in store.

A disappointing start to Argentina’s 2022 World Cup Campaign
At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina in a comeback, 2-1, to open play in Group C. Argentina’s 36-match winning streak since losing to Brazil in the 2019 Copa America semifinals was ended by the outcome. After a VAR-awarded penalty in the 10th minute, Argentina took the lead in the first half thanks to Lionel Messi, who earlier became the first player to appear in five world cups for the Albicelestes.
Argentina headed into halftime with a one-goal advantage after the 1978 and 1986 champions had three more shots on goal in the first period but were all disallowed for offside, twice for goals from Lautaro Martinez and once for another Messi left-footed strike.
Saleh Al-Shehri, who was just too quick for Romero, squeezed in a low shot to equalize in the 48th minute off Saudi Arabia’s first shot on target. Saudi Arabia, the second-lowest ranked team in the tournament after Ghana, charged at Argentina’s defense early in the second half in front of a frenzied 88,012 crowd. Salem Al-Dawsari completed the Asian team’s comeback five minutes later by bending a shot into the far top corner curler from the edge of the box after snatching the ball out of the air near the left corner of the box.
