WATCH: An absurd moment in football history as striker in Canadian Premier League clears the ball from his own scoring goal post
In the Canadian Premier League, a footballer committed one of the most spectacular misses of the season. During a match between Valour and HFX Wanderers, one player somehow screwed up a goal-bound strike from a teammate.
In 17 minutes, Alessandro Riggi had all the time in the world to shoot into an open net. As his strike was directed towards the net, he almost wheeled away in delight. However, for some reason, William Akio attempted to bury the ball himself, right on the goal line.
In fact, the ball had crossed the line before the attacker stepped on it, but it punted away around the post and away from the goal. It would have been easier to score from where it was. The commentator couldn’t believe it when he saw that it was a Valour player who had somehow knocked the ball off the goal line and out in the opposite direction.
OneSoccer, who tweeted the video, received a response from Valour FC. “Hey, @Twitter can you delete this,” they joked. “This guy stretched to prevent the ball from crossing the line for a goal. Either his brain short-circuited or someone he loves is being held hostage. Wow-what a gaffe,” one viewer commented on the video.
English Premier League has had a fair share of big misses as recently as the last season’s Harry Kane miss against Brighton
But misses happen to the most cynical striker of the game. In fact, Tottenham star Harry Kane was slammed for his ‘worst miss ever’ after failing to score an open goal in their Premier League clash against Brighton.
The Premier League star went around Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, but his strike sailed past the post. One fan said at the time, “That’s surely the miss of the season from Harry Kane right? 7 or so yards out with an open goal… and he misses the target entirely.” Another blasted, “Oh wow Harry Kane. That’s your worst miss ever.”
Someone tweeted, “I’d be embarrassed if I was him. Disgraceful miss, hang your head in shame mate.” Spurs ended up winning the game 2-0, with goals from Kane and Cristian Romero.
