Lionel Messi is set to join Inter Miami CF. The deal is done and people are excited to see him in the MLS. One of the major powers in convincing him for the same was football legend, David Beckham. However, back in 2020, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid poster boy did not show much appreciation to the player’s ability to be successful in a different league

While talking on a football show in 2020, Beckham was quoted saying, “Cristiano’s now obviously enjoying his time at Juve and his career has been incredible and Leo is a one-club wonder.” Although it seems like this was not a critique of Lionel Messi. But such comments made it seem that Beckham was underestimating Messi’s ability.

However, after this, Messi shortly had to switch clubs and ended up at PSG. Here the comments of being a one-club wonder were put to dust by Messi. He won successive League Titles with the Parisian outfit before eventually moving to Inter Miami. During his time at PSG, Messi scored 32 times and provided 34 assists in 75 total appearances for the club.

Messi proved his success on the global stage as well. He led Argentina to glory in Copa America. This was followed by the win in Finalissma for Argentina. Messi eventually got his hands on the biggest prize of them all when he guided Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.

David Beckham has pulled off the biggest deal in MLS history. He has lured Messi to the USA. With the news that the legendary World Cup winner would play at South Beach this summer. The former England captain’s aim of luring a world-famous superstar to his MLS side was achieved. David Beckham reveals how he used advice by former Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson to pull off this deal.

He explained: “One of the things I learned from Alex Ferguson, he turned around to me and said ‘whoever you bring in, they have to be the right fit for the club’. It’s not about the biggest name or personality, it’s about who fits in best with the players. That’s what we’ll do but, like I said, as an owner if you want to bring these players in then we have a great opportunity.”

While Messi definitely exceeds several criteria in terms of skill, it is likely that Beckham was also interested in signing a player with a track record. A player whose commitment and caliber might influence those around him. Messi’s presence in Miami will benefit the team as a whole. Given that many analysts believe he may be the best player to ever play the game, it is conceivable that the transfer will prove to be a game-changing turning point for the sport in the US.
