Lionel Messi taunted with rival's name during back to back defeats in Ligue 1

WATCH: PSG Fans troll Lionel Messi using Cristiano Ronaldo’s name in clash against Lyon

PSG fans have taken their taunts and chants beyond control. The supporters started chanting Cristiano Ronaldo when Lionel Messi went to take the corner. He was the victim of jeers by the Parisians fans at the Parc des Princes ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 clash against Olympique Lyon. The club has suffered back-to-back defeats in Ligue 1 with fans mostly victimizing the veteran forward.

The Argentine could not replicate his success at Camp Nou in his new club after having two underwhelming seasons. Despite putting up decent numbers at individual levels, it failed to showcase on the pitch when needed the most. The fans reportedly lost faith in Messi and voiced their displeasure subjecting him to boos and whistles in the latter fixtures.

The World Cup winner came with a lot of expectations, particularly for success in Europe’s biggest competition. Heavy investments including record-breaking fees to sign both Neymar Jr and Kylian Mbappe failed in doing so. Their best position was the final where they eventually lost to Bayern in the 2019-20 season. The Parisians believed bringing in Messi would bring the much-needed experience and winning mentality to the squad.

Interestingly enough, the Portuguese forward faced similar circumstances during his tenure in Saudi Arabia. Al Ittihad fans at the King Fahd Stadium taunted Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo by chanting about his rival in the GOAT debate, Lionel Messi’s name. He was seen seemingly frustrated about the situation which the fans took advantage of to mock him more. Both these legends have been compared with each other for the past decade with split decisions.

Before the event that crowned Leo Messi world champion, there was an agreement in principle for the renewal of the Argentine star with his current club, but after returning from Qatar, the negotiations were delayed because of the elimination in the Champions League of the Parisian team, which fell hard at the hands of Bayern Munich in the round of 16. PSG has not guaranteed Leo Messi a winning sporting project and negotiations have cooled down.

The option of Major League Soccer has always been there. Miami has long been keen to bring the greatest footballer of all time to its franchise, but there may be a different route. As reported, there is also the option of Major League Soccer clubs joining forces, putting money out of their own pockets to bring Leo Messi to La Liga with all that would entail in terms of impact and recovering the investment made with the large part of the sale of television rights.

The most recent of the options available to Leo Messi and also the most powerful financially, as the 400 million euros that Al-Hilal wants to put on the table would make him the highest-paid footballer in the world. But, on the other hand, it would also be the one that least appeals to the No 10 at the moment, although it is a proposal that he will study.

In recent days, Leo Messi has become more and more linked with the club that saw him arrive as a boy and from which he had to leave two summers ago. He established himself as one of the greatest players in the world at Barcelona so it is highly likely that the player and supporters will want a move to the club. However, financial difficulties will make it more challenging.
