MLS is gearing up for Lionel Messi’s arrival. Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber is prepared to implement significant alterations. One such change is the installation of real grass. Several teams in Major League Soccer continue to utilize wholly synthetic pitches. The problem lies that on artificial grass, the issue of injuries is considerably more frequent and is more dangerous to the players. According to 2019 research, artificial turfs have a higher injury rate than actual grass.

“MLS promotes a lot of international games, and we have been able to bring natural grass into those stadiums, but we’ve never done that for a regular-season game,” Garber said. He did, however, add that he anticipated clubs will implement that modification. Garber suggested modification by placing a covering of actual grass on top of the artificial turf underneath. Synthetic grass is used at five clubs in the MLS- Portland, Seattle, New England, Charlotte, and Atlanta.

Messi will play the majority of his matches on real grass, as Inter Miami uses real grass. However, he may face turfs on away days. The entirety of Argentine’s career has been spent on actual grass fields. The MLS has a vested interest in Messi and will make these changes to protect the Argentinian from any injuries.
