“What a special time it was”- Luuk de Jong buds goodbye to Barcelona as his 1-year loan spell comes to an end
Barcelona
Luuk de Jong joined Barcelona on loan from Sevilla last season as the club needed to replace outgoing Antoine Griezmann with a cheaper alternative. The Dutchman fit the wage bill perfectly as a backup striker.
Although the 31-year-old barely featured for Barcelona he still managed to score 6 goals in all competitions for Barcelona, despite making only 9 stars. The player took to Twitter to thank Barcelona and the fans, captioning “Culers, what a special time it was… I wish you all the best in the future!”
PSV is interested in re-signing Barcelona loanee Luuk de Jong this summer
Luuk de Jong joined Sevilla from PSV in 2019 for a fee of €12 million. His exploits in the Eredivise convinced Sevilla to sign the player. Although, Luuk de Jong couldn’t perform as highly in Spain.
Luuk de Jong managed just 19 goals in 94 appearances for Sevilla as compared to his 112 goals and 56 assists in 204 appearances for PSV. The player also helped the Dutch club win the league 3 times in his time there.
PSV now want to re-sign the Dutchman as they might lose Cody Cakpo to a bigger club this summer. The 23-year-old’s 21 goals and 15 assists last season grabbed a lot of attention.
Luuk de Jong’s time at Barcelona was filled with criticism. But the player did well at the tail end of the season to make the most of his chances and redeem himself. He now looks set to return to his country and help his former club.
