In 2006, Barcelona faced Chelsea in a heated Champions League tie. Several British football fans had their first look at the player many now regard as the greatest footballer of all time. Barca began with a three-pronged attack featuring Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o, and 18-year-old Lionel Messi.

Messi deserved accolades for his mature performance. However, Jose Mourinho, the manager of Chelsea at the time, wasn’t in the mood for it. The Portuguese coach was furious with Messi for what he saw as “play-acting” to have Asier del Horno dismissed just before halftime.

Del Horno collided with Messi, who had just humiliated Arjen Robben, and Barcelona’s No. 30 rolled around on the ground several times as the action unfolded around him. Mourinho was convinced Messi had cheated, and he didn’t mince words after the game.

“How do you say cheating in Catalan?” he said. “Can Messi be suspended for acting? Barcelona is a cultural city with many great theatres and this boy has learned very well. He’s learned play-acting.” On the incident that led to the red card, Messi added: “I got past Arjen Robben and Del Horno charged at me with bad intent. Luckily I see him coming and I jump because if not he would have hurt me much more.”

Reports suggest that Jose Mourinho could become the next Paris Saint Germain manager. The French club is looking for a manager to take them to glory after their Champions League exit next season. The Portuguese has emerged as a potential candidate.

Following PSG’s disastrous European form, PSG president Luis Campos reached out to ‘the special one,’ according to Footmercato. It will be an exciting partnership because fans will be able to see Mourinho in the Champions League once more. Things could get awkward for PSG star Lionel Messi, who left a trail of bitter emotions for the manager during his time at Barcelona.

Paris Saint Germain is 1st in Ligue 1, 11 points clear of second-placed Marseille. Their keyman, Messi has contributed with 13 goals and 13 assists in the league this season.
