Why is Bayern Munich investing so much on 22-year-old centre-back Matthijs de Ligt?

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich recently had to break the bank to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus for a fee of €80 million including add-ons. Even though the dee is too high, Bayern actually got the deal done for cheaper than what most expected.

Matthijs de Ligt broke into the limelight in 2019 when he helped Ajax reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, captaining the team as well. Promoting Juventus to sign the player for a then-record fee of €75 million. While his time at Juventus had his highs and lows, he became a more mature player at Turin.

How will Matthijs de Ligt improve Bayern Munich ?

Bayern Munich broke their bank on one defender back in 2019 when they signed Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid for €80 million. They also signed Dayot Upamecano last summer and have now signed De Ligt from Juventus for another record fee.

For the Bavarians, their defence has always been rock solid. For a long time, Bayern Munich also enjoyed the title of having the best defence in Europe, when they had the likes of Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, Philip Lahm and David Alaba with Manuel Neurs at the back. All these players have newly retired or left the club.

Hence, the German giants are now looking to reinvigorate their defence and want to have a backline that can be called the best again for years to come. The club already have the likes of Alphonse Davies and Lucas Hernandez as their young and mature centrebacks.

Matthijs brings with him tons of experience at just 22 years of age. Hence, the dutchman along with others gives Bayern a young yet experienced back line that can be their solid defensive rock for years to come.

Matthijs de Ligt took his time to adapt to Serie A football when he joined Juventus in 2019. Julian Nagelsmann will hope that the 22-year-old adapts to Bundesliga sooner and become an integral part of the system of Bayern Munich.
