Will Gareth Bale be coming back from retirement to join Wrexham? The Real Madrid legend delivers cheeky reply
the Welsh forward has however turned down the advancement of the Hollywood duo.
Gareth Bale has turned down an offer from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the Wrexham owners, who have been trying to tempt the Welsh winger out of retirement. Following Wrexham’s recent promotion to League Two, the owners set their sights on Bale, with McElhenney publicly extending an offer to discuss a single season with the club over a round of golf.
The club made a run at retired football star Gareth Bale for a single season at the club. However, the 33-year-old turned down the overtures from club owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Earlier this week, Reynolds and McElhenney made their pitches to Bale after the Welsh star offered up his congratulations to Wrexham on the club’s promotion.
“Let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend 4 hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season,” McElhenney tweeted at Bale. “I will shave a professional-grade golf course into Rob’s back if you’ll give Wrexham a season,” Reynolds added. “Depends on what course,” Bale tweeted back jokingly.
Bale has said he is happy in his retirement and won’t be joining Wrexham. ‘Obviously, I’m sure we’ll have a chat and a joke, but I’m quite happy where I am. Spending a lot of time with my kids and my wife. The time that I’ve lost so much of over the years, being committed to football. So just enjoying family life and playing some golf.’
Players Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney could sign for Wrexham in the transfer window
The Welsh side has finally confirmed their National League promotion and the transfer rumor mill is well and truly churning awayIt’s been an emotional rollercoaster since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over at Wrexham in November 2020. After a near miss last season, the Red Dragons finally secured the National League title by beating Boreham Wood on Saturday, which means they will be competing in the Football League for the first time since 2008 next campaign.
The club’s Hollywood owners have not been afraid of throwing their weight around in the transfer market in recent times, infamously convincing League Two top scorer Paul Mullin to forego a place in League One with Cambridge United and drop down two divisions in the summer of 2021. And more recently, Reynolds and McElhenney convinced Ben Foster to help Wrexham over the line in the final weeks of the season and the club look destined for more.
Danny Rose has endured a difficult few months. He has been out of the game since parting ways with Watford by mutual consent in September 2022, despite still only being 32. Wrexham seems the perfect club to rekindle his career. Another ex-England international who is in need of a career resurgence is Danny Drinkwater. The Premier League winner from Leicester City has been a free agent since Chelsea released him in 2022 after a disastrous spell.
Other players include Daniel Sturridge, Tom Heaton, Charlie Austin and many other former legends. It would be an ambitious effort to lure these players into the club but if they somehow do it, there is no doubt about their qualities and bolster the squad for survival in League two and more ambitiously, attain promotion in their first season itself.
