Will Manchester United readily accept Mason Greenwood right after all charges have been dropped against him? The Red Devils answer
The club has decided to take further action only after internal investigation
Manchester United released a club statement on Thursday saying that the club will investigate the allegations internally before deciding the future of Mason Greenwood. The local prosecution has acquitted the player of the accusations of domestic violence after one year of investigation.
The club statement read “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”
What Happened?
The 21-year-old was put under investigation in January 2022 after his then-girlfriend Harriet Robinson posted a picture where she was bruised. She filed a complaint with the local police department saying that she was abused by the striker. Apart from that, she had also claimed that Greenwood had raped her in his Cheshire mansion, a place the young couple shared.
Greenwood received widespread backlash in the wake of the reports. He was also dropped from the team and the club released a statement saying that the contract with Greenwood would be suspended. Greenwood’s cleats deal with Nike was also terminated immediately. The brand had said, “deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation”.

What’s happened in between?
Things have taken a sharp turn since autumn as the estranged couple was spotted together again around October. They had also followed each other back on their social media profiles. Twitteratti soon added two and two and anticipated that Robinson will drop the charges eventually. Greenwood, however, avoided public sightings.
What’s going on?
Earlier on Thursday, the Crown Prosecution Service, announced that a key witness has withdrawn all charges and therefore Greenwood would be acquitted of all charges. A spokesperson for the watchdog said, “We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review. In this case, a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case. We have explained our decision to all parties. We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met.”
Chief superintendent, Michaela Kerr, also added, “I would, however, like to use this opportunity to reiterate the force’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, throughout what can be a hard and upsetting time for them.“
What Now?
Although the allegations were dropped, the club has made its intentions very clear. The forward was in a state of steady rise through the ranks and was touted to be a generational talent owing to his technique and eye for goal. However, it remains to be seen whether he can get his place back under manager Eric Ten Hag. Ten Hag, a disciplinarian, has not stepped away from punishing an in-form Rashford for a slight misdemeanour.
