Fans were left surprised after Inter Miami right-back DeAndre Yedlin was seen giving the captain’s pep talk ahead of their season opener against Real Salt Lake. Yedlin captained the Herons before the arrival of Lionel Messi, who now leads the side.
The 30-year-old American full-back, who joined Inter Miami in 2022, after spending a few successful seasons in Europe with Newcastle United and Galatasaray, was the club captain until Messi signed in 2023. Yedlin himself decided to give up the captaincy and hand it over to the 2022 World Cup winner as a mark of respect. Despite relinquishing the armband, he was observed giving the team talk on the field alongside veterans Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez.
Messi captained Inter Miami against Real Salt Lake, in the first match of the new MLS season. The match ended in a 2-0 win for the Herons, to endure a positive start for the team. Moreover, the Argentinean played a pivotal role by helping set up both goals. Robert Taylor‘s goal in the 39th minute provided Inter with a comfortable halftime advantage, while Diego Gomez‘s goal in the 83rd minute secured the win for the home team.
DeAndre Yedlin has played an important role for Inter Miami since he joined two years ago. He was praised for passing the captain’s armband to Messi on his debut against Cruz Azul a year ago. Messi repaid the gesture by inviting Yedlin to lift the League Cup trophy together.

The Herons were supposed to generate fervor among fans all around the world, as they played eight friendly matches against teams all around the world. However, the tour didn’t go as planned, with Miami winning only one out of the eight matches. Suarez participated in nearly all the matches, scoring just one goal against Al-Hilal, while Messi missed several games due to injury.
Inter Miami’s recent win over Real Salt Lake in the MLS, also generated a lot of frustration for the two players, as the team missed some crucial chances. Additionally, Paraguayan forward Diego Gomez’s missed opportunity against Newell’s last week also added to the frustration of the two stars.
