“You are never bigger than a club” – PSG legend believes Kylian Mbappe should have joined Real Madrid in summer

According to PSG legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Kylian Mbappe made the correct decision for the club but not for himself by opting not to sign with Real Madrid in the summer. Before joining Manchester United in 2016, Ibrahimovic had scored 156 goals for PSG in four years. Mbappe took over as the team’s leading scorer a year later.

Mbappe (189 goals) has now surpassed Ibrahimovic as PSG’s all-time leading scorer, and by the conclusion of this season, he’ll have convincingly surpassed Edinson Cavani’s mark of 200 goals. Ibrahimovic, though, is confident that the Frenchman shouldn’t have chosen to sign a new contract at Parc des Princes rather than sign with Real Madrid as a free agent.

The veteran Swede said it appeared more like comfort than desire. “Mbappe, as a person I do not know him very well. As a player, he is fantastic. But when you lose discipline you lose your identity,” Ibrahimovic told Canal+ “There is a reason why Zidane is Zidane. Mbappe wants to imitate him? That he starts to want to progress. Not to be satisfied.”

“He made the right choice for Paris not for himself. Because he put himself in a situation where he is more important than the club. And the club gave him the keys for that. But you are never bigger than a club. But when a child becomes strong, he can easily earn money,” he added.

Kylian Mbappe departing PSG in January is a ‘possibilty’

Mbappe smashes spectacular record in PSG’s frustrating draw vs Benfica

Mbappe and PSG have already had a rocky relationship since he signed his new contract in May. He informed the club of his desire to quit in October as friction grew behind the scenes. Real Madrid continues to have a strong interest in the 23-year-old, and his representatives have been in contact with Bernabeu personnel to keep them updated on the situation.

Mbappe prefers to depart PSG in January but understands that it won’t be possible to complete such a high-profile and difficult move in the middle of the season. PSG has also insisted that they have no imminent plans to sell him, despite the fact that president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is understandably upset about how the situation has turned out.

Despite this, PSG are not anticipated to obstruct a reasonable transfer given that the player signed a contract and at the very least guaranteed the team wouldn’t lose him as a free agent.
