Premier League players involved in Tokyo Olympics 2020
The Tokyo Olympics games 2020, is all set to kick off within a week and over the next fortnight, all of the sports fans’ attention would be on the outcome from these games. Initially as the name suggests, the Tokyo Olympic games were scheduled to be held in 2020, but had to postponed because of the raging Covid-19 pandemic.
Football is also a part of these Olympic games, and will kick off on July 22nd and will see 16 teams battle for the Gold medal. The teams have been divided into 4 groups among which the top 2 would qualify for the knockouts. Although, top international stars do not feature in the Olympic games for their countries there are still a number of promising young players who would be in action over the next few days. We take a look at the Premier league players involved in Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Manchester United- Amad Diallo, Eric Bailly
Manchester United have two representatives at the Tokyo Olympics in the form of veteran defender Eric Bailly and upcoming youngster Amad Diallo. Both of these players would be in action for their national team Ivory Coast and would therefore miss the pre-season action for their club side in the build up to next season’s Premier League campaign. Eric Bailly is one of the over-aged players in the Ivory Coast side.
Arsenal – Gabriel Martinelli
Arsenal will have a sole representation at the games, and it will be in the form of Brazilian striker Gabriel Martinelli. The youngster suffered a difficult season at Arsenal last season, as he was plagued by injuries one after the other. The 20-year old only played 14 Premier League matches scoring just 2 goals. However, he looks to be getting back to his best and scored a goal for Brazil in their friendly win over United Arab Emirates in the lead-up to the games.
Everton – Richarlison
Another Premier League and Brazilian player would be seen is Richarlison who plays for Everton. The forward recently played for his national side in the Runners’ up campaign in Copa America and will now be seen flying to the other side of the World to help his team lift the Gold in this summers Olympic games. He is one of the 3 over-aged players chosen for the games.
West Ham – Winston Reid
The 33-year old West Ham player Winston Reid will be in action for New Zealand in this year’s games. The centre-back is a veteran of the league having joined the London side in 2010. He has made a total of 194 appearances for West-Ham in the 10 years. He spent the last season on loan at Championship side Brentford and helped them to earn a promotion back into the Premier League.
Aston Villa – Douglas Luiz
Yet another Premier League Brazilian player in the form of Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz would be seen in this summer’s Olympics. He joined the club back in 2019 and is an integral part of this summer’s Brazilian team and will be seen playing in the midfield core of the Seleccaos.
