Ralf Rangnick says Anthony Martial refused to be included in the squad; Martial denies
Interim manager Ralf Rangnick, after Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League draw at Aston Villa, said manchester United forward Anthony Martial refused to be included in the squad for the game.
The German Manager said:
“Yes, he didn’t want to be in the squad,” Rangnick said. “He would have been in the squad normally but he didn’t want to and that was the reason why he didn’t travel with us yesterday.”
The 26-year-old has started only two league games for the club this season and is yet to be featured again since the 3-2 win over Arsenal on December 2.
Last month, Anthony Martial’s agent said the player was determined on leaving Manchester United in January in order to gain more game time.
“Anthony wishes to leave the club in January.
“He just needs to play. He doesn’t want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon,” Philippe Lamboley told Sky Sports News.
Anthony Martial denies refusing to be in the squad
However, Anthony Martial was quick to refute the allegations.
Just before midnight on Saturday, Martial posted on his Instagram Story: “I will never refuse to play a match for Man United.
“I’ve been here for 7 years and I never disrespected and never will disrespect the club and the Fans.”
Martial signed a new contract in January 2019 that expires in 2024. He has scored 79 goals in 268 games for United.
Aston Villa comeback holds United for draw
Aston Villa came back from two goals down to hold United for a 2-2 draw at Villa Park.
Manchester United dominated the first half as the first goal came from Bruno Fernandes who scored again later in the second half to double the lead. However, they failed to hold on to the lead.
Jacob Ramsey and Villa’s new loan signing Philippe Coutinho scored in short intervals to level the scoreline.
