Real Madrid’s fixture against Athletic Bilbao postponed by La Liga
Real Madrid
Real Madrid’s next fixture in the Spanish league against Athletic Bilbao, which was all set to.take place immediately after the international break has been postponed by La Liga. The reason for the postponement was the fact that Real Madrid’s South American players have their World Cup qualifying matches on 15th October and won’t be able to return to Spain to take part in the weekend fixtures.
Therefore La Liga authorities will now have to finalize a date for the fixture to be held later on which will be beneficial for both teams given their other commitments in Europe and in the domestic cup competitions.
Real Madrid’s South American players will be playing for their countries on 15th October
In the previous season, Real came out winners on both occasions as they defeated Athletic Club 3-1 at home, before securing a 1-0 victory at San Mames courtesy of a penalty goal from long-serving club captain Sergio Ramos.
Real Madrid are currently top of the La Liga table with 17 points from the first 8 matches while Athletic Club are 7th in the table with 13 points. The fixture between the Basque side and Los Blancos is one of the high-profile matches of La Liga and has been a hard-fought contest in the past.
However, the Los Blancos are going through a rough patch at the moment and have failed to win their last three matches. A 2-1 shock defeat against Sheriff in the Champions League was followed up with another shock defeat against Espanyol in La Liga, before the start of the international break.
Carlo Ancelotti will look to use the international break to his advantage and prepare his side tactically to regain the form they had shown in the earlier weeks of the season. Real wi next be seen in action directly in the Champions League on the 19th of October against Ukrainian outfit, Shakhtar Donetsk.
