Robert Lewandowski breaks Bundesliga record for most goals as Bayern Munich win League title

Bayern Munich completed the formalities in the Bundesliga by notching up a massive 5-2 victory over Augsburg in their final match of the season. Robert Lewandowski grabbed the headlines once again by scoring a record breaking goal eclipsing Gerd Mueller’s tally of most goals in a season.

Gerd Muller had set the record of 40 goals in a Bundesliga season in the year 1971/72 and the record has stayed on for over 4 decades only to be broken by Robert Lewandowski in the final minutes of this season. Needless to say, Bayern Munich won the match by a comfortable margin with goals from Gnabry, Kimmich, Coman and Lewandowski.

His hat-trick against Borussia Mönchengladbach last Saturday put him one goal shy of equalling Müller’s record of 40 goals in a single season that came in the 1971/72 campaign. He then levelled with the long-standing record with a penalty against Freiburg last weekend.

Robert Lewandowski’s moment for the ages arrived in dramatic style in the 90th minute of the match. Leroy Sane’s initial shot from outside the box was spilled by the Augsburg keeper and the Polish striker followed it up by putting it into the net.

Lewandowski rounded off the keeper and slotted it into an empty net to score his 41st goal of the Bundesliga season and with that handed Hansi Flick a perfect sending-off from the club.

Bayern had already wrapped up the league and now Lewandowski etched his name in the Bundesliga and Bayern Munich history books forever with his record breaking season. The striker is also leading the race for the European Golden Boot with 42 goals, 11 ahead of second placed Lionel Messi.
