“I’m sorry for the upset I have caused”: Romelu Lukaku apologises to fans for his Controversial Interview

Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku was arguably the most trending Sports personnel on the Internet this week, for all the wrong reasons. In an interview that the Belgian International gave to Sky Sports, he said some things that highly offended the Chelsea fans and things worsened so much that Lukaku was left out of Chelsea’s squad for their big match against Liverpool on Match-day 21 of the ongoing Premier League season.

In the interview, Romelu Lukaku said that he was better off at Inter and that he was unhappy at Chelsea. The Belgian also said that he would love to return to the Serie A side in near future if he gets the opportunity to do so. This led to a huge drama which went on for over a week.

However, Romelu Lukaku has now finally apologised to head coach Thomas Tuchel and his teammates and he has issued a message for the fans through Chelsea’s official website. He has also resumed training with the squad.

In the interview he gave to Chelsea’s website, Romelu Lukaku said “I should have been much clearer in my message.”

“The interview was about saying goodbye to the Inter [Milan] fans, and it wasn’t about trying to disrespect the [Chelsea] fans, my team-mates, the club and the manager.”

“They made a lot of effort to bring me here and I wanted to come back. I have been on a mission since I left so I totally understand the frustration of the fans, but now it is on me to make sure I show my commitment 100%.”

On being asked whether he thinks the fans would now start questioning his loyalty towards the club, Lukaku said, “Nah nah they don’t need to question that. At the end of the day you know I have always said that I wanted to come back to Chelsea. I came here to be successful, that’s why I signed a 5-year deal. Because I think Chelsea is a club that is equal to success.”

“All the players that come in are winning and I have a special passion for this club and I also achieve that with this football club. I want to win here for many years. That’s why I signed a five year deal. And I want to make sure that I show my commitment in training everyday and also in the games for this football club.”

Romelu Lukaku was just 18 during his first spell at Chelsea FC.

In the Interview that Lukaku gave to Sky Sports, there was a part where he said it’s every player’s dream to play for clubs like Real Madrid and FC Barcelona and he thought his next big move will be to one such club. However in his apology video, he explained that this was totally misinterpreted.

“Not at all. What I meant by this is that there are a lot of kids who dream of joining clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. For me my club was chelsea. Everybody knows that. From being 10 or 11 years old I always wanted to say that I played for chelsea. I came here when i was 18, it did not go very well and now i am back here at 28. I think in the prime years of my career, I can’t really mess this up. I worked really hard for the last 10 years to get this opportunity and I am really happy to be here,” Lukaku explained.

The Striker concluded the video by saying sorry to the fans for his actions.

“I am sorry for the upset I have caused. You guys know the connection I have to the club and I totally understand you guys being upset,” Lukaku said.

“It was not the right moment and I want to move forward and make sure we start winning football matches.”
