“Sometimes quality is not enough”- Luke Shaw devastated after yet another disappointing loss

“Sometimes quality is not enough”- Luke Shaw devastated after yet another disappointing loss

Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday after midfielder Joao Moutinho scored the all important goal in the 82nd minute of the game, which also saw the unbeaten run under interim manager Ralf Rangnick come to an end. It is Wolves first win at Old Trafford since 1980 and Bruno Lage’s side thoroughly deserved the win and nothing less as they were by far the better team over the course of the game.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw gave an honest assessment in his post match interview following his side’s disappointing performance in a 1-0 loss to Wolves. The left back said that the players need to be together and the team did not put enough pressure on Wolves with the quality Manchester United has.

“We were not good enough, we really struggled, we couldn’t get hold of the ball and when we didn’t have the ball we weren’t aggressive enough. We didn’t put them under any pressure.” Shaw said.

The England international further added that sometimes quality of the players is not enough and the result is not due to the adjustments of the new manager. “I don’t think you can put it on [adjusting to a new manager]. Us players, we have been here a long time, we know what it’s like when we have the intensity – when the motivation’s there. But maybe tonight we struggled, I didn’t think we were all there together. We felt like we were struggling. You look at the players we have, we have unbelievable quality but sometimes quality is not enough.”

Manchester United are now four points off of fourth place with the race for the last Champions League spot getting ever so tight. However Ralf Rangnick’s side do have a couple of games in hand, but if the performances do not improve then Manchester United will run the risk of missing Champions League football next season.

“Phil Jones should be proud of himself”- Luke Shaw had high praise for his teammate despite the loss

Phil Jones against Wolves

Phil Jones made his first Manchester United appearances since January 2020 and after 712 days to be precise. With Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly out with injuries and Victor Lindelof still recovering from COVID-19 the England international was impressive for the Red Devils at the back and his teammate Luke Shaw was right on hand to appreciate the hard-work and effort put in by Jones everyday.

“One thing I will say is Phil Jones should be proud of himself. He has been criticised for years, and has gone through a lot, but he is so professional and he has trained hard and he was phenomenal. I am very happy for him and he deserves it.”
