“..That’s why I gave the players off”- Thomas Tuchel reveals why Chelsea won’t train for the next 2 days

After what was a lacklustre 1-1 draw at Falmer Stadium, Chelsea are currently four matches in without a win. At the press conference after the match, manager Thomas Tuchel stated that his players are physically and mentally tired.

He said, “We are tired, mentally and physically. You can see it in our performance. It’s as easy as that.

Chelsea’s last win in the Premier League came in a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa on Boxing Day, since gaining three points from the last 12 available.

They remained in third place with 44 points, 12 behind leaders Manchester City having played a game more. Liverpool are second with 45 points having played two games fewer than Chelsea.

When asked about players taking a break, Thomas Tuchel said that the players badly need a break to recharge themselves.

He said, “So, so badly. You can use the excuse but it is like this. Look at the schedule, when we arrived at Man City we had a Carabao Cup match and we arrive here and they had more time to prepare.

We have played since November; we play and play and play. We need to recharge the batteries and disconnect. This is my feeling.

We don’t complain..” – Thomas Tuchel on the packed fixture

The German manager was asked if he had ever experienced a schedule as such before.

To this, Tuchel replied, “Look at our last week and you know what we are talking about. Within seven days we had three away games and it’s not only about playing, it’s about travelling and not sleeping.

We don’t complain now but I am explaining why a performance looks like this in the middle of January against Brighton. If you tell me before this never happened to Chelsea before or another Premier League team I would laugh. It’s happened.”

Thomas Tuchel had a great start to his managerial role with Chelsea but the last few weeks have been very hard for his team. The team was considered to be among the favourites to win the Premier League title this season, but the deteriorating performances no longer indicate any chances of them coming back to win the title.
