Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte was left furious after his side suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat against Middlesbrough in the 5th Round of the FA Cup. The Italian manager was not at all happy with his team’s performance and was honest enough to admit that Tottenham did not deserve to win the game at all.

Middlesbrough, on the other hand, are having a tremendous FA Cup campaign after beating Manchester United in the 4th Round on penalties, and now beating Tottenham Hotspur in the 5th Round in extra time. Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder has won a lot of plaudits and was eagerly congratulated by Antonio Conte after the game yesterday night.

It has been 14 years now since Tottenham Hotspur last won a trophy. The trophy drought extended even further after the team’s loss to Middlesbrough in extra time in the 5th Round of the FA Cup. Antonio Conte named an unchanged 11 from the team that won 4-0 at Elland Road against Leeds United during the weekend. However, Spurs looked really out of place and there was no desire or conviction to win the tie.

Tottenham Hotspur had too many chances to take the lead with Son Heung-Min squandering and wasting golden opportunities. Harry Kane scored for the Premier League side but it was ruled offside via a tough VAR check. Eventually, it was the 19 year old Josh Coburn who scored the winner for Middlesbrough in extra time to get the win for the Championship side.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte thought his team did not deserve to win the game against Middlesbrough in the 5th Round of the FA Cup. The Italian manager was not at all happy with his team’s performance and was really straightforward in the post-match interview.

Antonio Conte said,” For sure the result is not good and we have to be frustrated. It was a pity because in these types of game you have to start and kill your opponent. If you give them hope, they will take confidence and improve during the game. Then anything can happen.”

The Spurs boss added,” First of all, it is important to say that Middlesbrough played a good game, deserves respect and congratulate them for the win. We have to reflect on our performance and on the game we played. These type of games, in these trophies away from home, you have to try to kill the game quickly.”

“Your opponent has to understand that the night will be difficult, instead we can do much better and in the end Middlesbrough deserved to go through the next round. This is part of our process. I repeat, we have to try to avoid the up and down and there is only one way to improve the situation is to work and learn about the defeat. We have to go ahead and try and we will try to do our best this season,” said the Italian manager.

Conte lastly said,” My old coaches in Italy, they taught me that the coach sometimes has to use the carrot, sometime they have to use the stick. I have to use the right way. After Burnley with a stick and then we won. After Leeds with a carrot and we lost. The coach has to be clear in his instruction. I know there is a lot of space for improvement.”
