Lionel Messi’s PSG were up against Real Madrid in the first leg of Champions League Round of 16 tie and it was a night to forget personally for the Argentine superstar as he missed from the penalty spot with Real Madrid shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois coming up big for his side to deny the seven-time Ballon D’or winner. Messi has now missed three of his last five penalties in all competitions.
PSG had the control over the proceedings and large chunk of possession in the first half. The likes of Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi had few chances far and wide and were unable to break the Real Madrid backline. However in the second half the game did open up and Kylian Mbappe was brought down by Dani Carvarjal who was having a tough night against the French international. Lionel Messi had the chance to give PSG a much deserved 1-0 but saw his effort from 12-yards saved by Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois.
It was Lionel Messi’s first ever penalty miss against Real Madrid and with that the former FC Barcelona man has equalled Thierry Henry for an unwanted Champions League record. Messi has now the joint most penalty missed in the Champions League alongside Thierry Henry. Messi has missed five of the 23 penalties he’s taken in the Champions League. It was Kylian Mbappe who came up clutch for Paris Saint Germain in injury time getting past two Madrid players and scoring through the legs of Courtois.

It was surely a night to forget for Lionel Messi on individual level as he missed his penalty against Real Madrid in the Champions League. Messi has have a tough start to life at PSG since he made the move in the summer. According to reports Lionel Messi was given a 3/10 rating by L’Equipe for his performance against Real Madrid.
