It had to be Cristiano Ronaldo, to score the opening goal for Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League encounter against Villarreal. The Portuguese superstar turned up yet again when his side needed him to, scoring from a dinked finish in the second half of the match.

The goal came in the 78th minute of the match, from a mistake from Villarreal midfielder Étienne Capoue, who gave the ball away after Fred’s high press caught him unawares near the penalty box.

The ball lobbed up for Cristiano Ronaldo who was just positioned near the edge of the penalty box and he struck it the first time to lobbing it past Geronimo Rulli, who had come rushing out to stop the shot. He also had another chance to add to his tally, after another defensive lapse from Juan Foyth gave him a chance to shoot on goal. However, his shot was just wide of the post and the score remained at 1-0 in favour of United.

Ronaldo has now scored in all 5 of United’s Champions League matches, making it 6 goals in 5 appearances. The goal was Ronaldo’s 799th career goal for both club and country.

Manchester United looked deflated in the first half but were much better in the second half after new coach Michael Carrick brought on Bruno Fernandes and Rashford. Mason greenwood also got in on the act, in the 90th minute to score his first goal for Manchester United as they sealed a 2-0 victory to confirm their entry into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.
