France are looking to book their place in the quarter final and set up a date with Spain but before that they have to face the acid test that Switzerland pose in today’s Round of 16 from the National Arena in Bucharest. With France missing Lucas Digne and Hernandez in defense they had to shake things up as they brought back Lenglet into the starting 11.
France and Switzerland got off to a very good start, with France looking nervously defensively whilst Switzerland started the match positively and approached the game in hand with a nothing to loose attitude with their wingbacks Zuber and Widmer providing the attacking intent
Seferovic gives Swiss an early lead
Seferovic heads Switzerland into the lead against the World Champions.
After a lively 15 minutes where both team looked to create chances, Seferovic had a shot outside the box blocked, but it fell calmly to Zuber who carried the ball and delivered a very inviting cross from the left into the box. Striker Seferovic who had continued his run into the box, jumped over Lenglet who didn’t do enough to deter the striker, and placed a beautiful measured header past Lloris .
Late in the second half, Pavard gives away a penalty, however Lloris saves to keep France alive in the game.
Zuber’s attacking threat from wingback has been a constant threat as France have struggled to contain him. In another way run, Pavard slid into Zuber, however the referee didn’t budge, before VAR overturned the decision and awarded an penalty. On stepped Rodrigues but Lloris made a fine save on his left to keep Swiss out.
