WATCH: Neymar furiously confronts referee in Brazil’s victory over Colombia in World Cup qualifier
Neymar once again brought out his furious side to the football pitch in Brazil’s latest World Cup qualifying encounter against Colombia. The Brazilian superstar clashed with the referee chest to the chest after being angered by a decision made by the man in charge and was lucky to have escaped punishment for the act.
The incident occurred just 8 minutes into the match, as Neymar saw his teammates being thrown to the floor by the Colombian players, who opted to make heavy challenges which is generally how they play their football. Roberto Vargas, the Chilean referee held his nerve and decided not to award a booking for Neymar after he almost went head to head- an act which most referees would not take lightly in the modern era.
Neymar also provided the assist for Brazil’s winner helping them secure qualification into next year’s World Cup in Qatar
Even the on-duty commentator seemed to take offence to Neymar’s violent action on the referee and called him out for not abiding by the basic rules of respecting the referee.
However, Neymar eventually earned himself a yellow card late on in the match once again for dissent, but not before providing the telling pass which allowed Brazil to score the winner through Lucas Paqueta.
Brazil held onto their 1-0 lead for the final 20 minutes and the three points confirmed their spot in the World Cup next year in Qatar. The Seleccaos are the only nation from South America to have qualified for the marquee event next year, and they have done it in style, winning 11 of their 12 matches while drawing the other one.
Neymar has been in superb form for Brazil in the World Cup qualifying campaign, recording seven goals and seven assists in the 12 matches in which he has featured so far.
