Spanish soccer teams love to compete in the Copa del Rey. The knockout tournament has been around ever since 1903. And players have always relished the opportunity to progress to the next stage of the competition.

In fact, the Copa del Rey can be likened to England’s FA Cup. Both of these domestic competitions hold a lot of prestige and a good history. Last night, Real Madrid reportedly defeated Osasuna in a 2-1 victory to lift the Copa Del Rey trophy after a long wait of nine years since the last time they managed to lift it was in 2014.

5. Valencia: 19

Valencia won the championship for the last time in 2018–19 under the management of Marcelino. They prevented Barcelona from winning their sixth consecutive Copa by upsetting them in the championship match. Valencia first won the tournament in the 1941-42 season. From then till now the club has managed to lift the Cop Del Rey trophy 19 times.

4. Atlético Madrid: 19

Even though Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of the largest football clubs in Spain. Atlético Madrid can also be counted in the list of the team is one of the greatest in Spain. It’s been over ten years since they last accomplished the goal of winning the competition. After winning the Copa del Rey in 2012–2013, Atletico Madrid has failed to win the Copa Del Rey.

The club first lifted the Copa Del Rey trophy back in 1921. But the format of the tournament later changed and in the new format, they won the trophy for the first time in 1939-40. Since then, Atletico Madrid have managed to win the trophy 19 times altogether.

3. Real Madrid: 20

Real Madrid have won the Champions League a remarkable 13 times and LaLiga 34 times. This reportedly makes them the most dominant team in Europe and Spain. Yet in the Copa del Rey, they haven’t had the best of luck. Although last night Real Madrid won the Copa Del Rey Final match against Osasuna with a 2-1 score line.

This victory has taken their winning tally of Copa Del Rey to 20 times. Before yesterday, the last time they lifted the trophy was in 2013–14. It was also under Carlo Ancelotti. Real Madrid’s first lifted this trophy in the season 1905. After the change in the format of the competition, they won it for the first time in 1934.

Athletic Bilbao were one of the most dominant domestic teams in the previous century. Especially back in the 1940s. They are deserving of praise only for having more Copa del Rey victories than Real Madrid.

Yet since taking home the domestic double in 83/84, they have struggled to add to their total. The Basque natives first lifted the Copa Del Rey trophy in the 1903-04 season. Although back then the tournament wasn’t molded into the league format.

1. FC Barcelona: 31 Times

FC Barcelona holds the record for both most victories and finals participation with 31 out of a possible 42. Barcelona won the Cup del Rey last time under Ronald Koeman in the 2020-21 season. They lead the list since they are the only club to have won the trophy more than 30 times.

The club first won the trophy back in 1910. Although after the change of format of the competition in 1929, Barcelona won the trophy for the first time in 1942.
