Aljamain Sterling has been named the new UFC Bantamweight champion after UFC 259. The fight was a disaster and this couldn’t have been worse. Petr Yan who was the reigning the Bantamweight champion before the fight loses his title by throwing a illegal knee to Aljamain’s head while he was grounded. The fights were poised equally up until that disaster class by Petr Yan.
In the 4th round of the fight, Petr Yan striking really well, caught Sterling on the ground on his knee, the former champion despite knowing the rules, intentionally knee’d his opponent which led to a controversial disqualification. According to the rules of UFC, if your opponent is considered grounded which in most places means has a knee or three points of his body on the mat, you cannot knee him.
Doctors immediately rushed the octagon and made sure that Aljamain Sterling was doing okay. Aljamain then gained some courage to do the post match interview with Joe Rogan. In the interview Joe Rogan suggested that, the two of the judges had Aljamain down by one point and one judge’s card had Sterling leading it. When asked about the controversy, Sterling said, “Everything I worked for man, and for it to F*cking go down like that.”
Aljamain stated that he was down and is disappointed that Yan did this. “This is bullshit,” the fighter said. The fight ended when the doctors came in and asked for the fight to be stopped. When asked if he was okay by the doctors, Sterling said, “now that I’m lying down I am fine.”
Khabib Nurmagomedov reveals that Yan’s coaches advised him to knee Sterling while he was down
In the post match conference, Joe Rogan told Aljamain Sterling that Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was coaching Islam Makachev overheard the sidelines. The Russian said that when Petr Yan asked his team if he could hit him, they advised him to go for it. There is no doubt there will be serious investigation about the knee.
Fans and UFC aces were absolutely in shock that Petr Yan would do this. This is the worst possibly way to have lose the championship. UFC 259 has been ecstatic and eventful so far and full of drama. From the Kara-France referee madness to the illegal knee. Fans also conspire that Aljamain played it smart to stay down and stress more on the knee.
