France will lock horns with Argentina in the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022, on December Sunday (December 18). Ahead of that high-octane clash, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar was asked to choose between Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Gavaskar first praised Messi for his outstanding match against Croatia in the semi-final, but went on to say that his favorite is the Portuguese star.

It was good. Look, to be honest, I’m not such a big football fan that I watch a lot of football I do occasionally of course. I hadn’t really seen much of Messi but the way he made that goal. I mean in the sense that the goal was credited to somebody else, but the way he weaved around and then you know then he passed it on. That just shows you know why people rate him as the best. For me of course, Ronaldo is the best,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.

The 73-year-old also named Brazil his favorite team. Brazil was eliminated from the tournament in the quarter-final match against Croatia. The match was dragged to a penalty shoot-out where Croatia outclassed the five-time champions by 4-2.

Brazil was my favorite team. Brazil is to football like what West Indies is to cricket. The kind of flair that they bring in, the kind of fun element we talked about. This time around they were talking about you know the dance which they would do [Samba] after every goal which didn’t go down well with some people. Which is fine I mean that’s life you know somethings are going to be liked, somethings are not going to be liked” he added.
