- Ion Tiriac believes Jannik Sinner can surpass Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon titles.
- Sinner has won his first Wimbledon and is currently the World No.1 after winning the Monte Carlo Masters.
- He has the potential to achieve a Career Grand Slam and win over 20 Grand Slams in his career.
Former Tennis player Ion Tiriac has set a clear benchmark for Jannik Sinner’s long-term trajectory on tour. One of which is to win more than eight Wimbledon Championships, which will beat Roger Federer’s record. With Sinner having just won one Wimbledon, achieving that currently looks out of reach.
Sinner claimed his first Wimbledon title last year, when he defeated his arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz in four sets. It was the first time in his career that he reached the final of the tournament. However, it was the third consecutive season that Alcaraz reached the final at the All England Club, having won it twice.
The Italian star is in excellent form on tour, and he’s yet to lose a match in over a month. The last time he suffered a defeat was at the Qatar Open in February. He became the first player since Roger Federer in 2017 to complete the Sunshine Double (winning the Indian Wells and Miami Open).
He continued with his form on clay last week, dropping just one set en route to the Monte Carlo Masters final. The 24-year-old claimed his third ATP Masters 1000 title of the season after beating Alcaraz in straight sets. The win ensured that he reclaimed the World No.1 position, having lost it last September.
Sinner has won just two titles on grass in his career; the first coming at the Terra Wortmann Open in 2024. That is two fewer than his rival, Alcaraz, on tour. During an interview on La Politica nel Pallone, Tiriac revealed that he hopes Sinner beats Federer’s record, while stating that he looks forward to another match-up between the Italian star and Alcaraz:
Which Slam can he win multiple times? In my opinion, Wimbledon. He can aim to beat Roger Federer’s record of eight titles. He can win again on clay after Monte-Carlo, it’s no coincidence that he came very close to winning in Paris last year. I hope that at Roland Garros we will see another final between Sinner and Alcaraz. They deserve it.
Sinner has won the last two meetings between him and Alcaraz on the court. Before that, he had lost six of their seven meetings. He currently holds a 7-10 head-to-head record against the Spaniard. The Monte Carlo Masters final match-up was their first this season. They met six times on tour last year, all in tournament finals in the men’s singles circuit.
Ion Tiriac hopes Jannik Sinner will win more than 20 Grand Slams
Jannik Sinner has the opportunity to complete a Career Grand Slam at the French Open, which begins next month. The World No.1 has won the Australian Open, Wimbledon Championships, and the US Open. He got to the final of the French Open last year but lost to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets after over five hours on the court.

Alcaraz became the youngest player in the Open Era to complete a Career Grand Slam at the Australian Open in January. Should Sinner achieve the same heights, it will take their rivalry to another level. During the aforementioned interview, Ion Tiriac revealed that Sinner can win over 20 Grand Slams in his career:
Economically, Sinner is worth at least €100 million per year, more than double a footballer. I think he can complete the Grand Slam. The last one was Rod Laver fifty years ago, but it’s time someone does it again. Hopefully it can be Jannik. He can go above 20 Slams, easily. What he needs is simply someone to help him with scheduling.
Sinner is currently taking a rest from the tour, while Alcaraz is competing at the Barcelona Open. The World No.2 is seeking to reclaim the top spot in the ATP rankings, should he win the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona. Sinner has hinted he might miss the Madrid Open and then return to the court at the Rome Masters.
