Former Australian Player Pat Cash has revealed that Alexander Zverev needs to follow a strict game plan to beat Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon Championships final on Sunday (July 12). Sinner and Zverev will face off for the 15th time on tour and in their first Grand Slam final since the 2025 Australian Open.
Zverev booked his place in the final of the grass-court Grand Slam for the first time in his career after beating Arthur Fery 7-6(7), 6-2, 6-4 at the Center Court. This time last year, the German star had already crashed out of Wimbledon, and after losing to Arthur Rinderknech in the first round, he admitted he needed therapy.
But in recent weeks, Zverev has been playing with a newfound confidence on the court, and that can be traced to the Roland Garros triumph last month. It was his first Grand Slam title after losing three finals, and he ended the three-year dominance of Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz in major tournaments.
He will face Sinner, who produced one of his best performances in months to beat Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, in the semi-finals on Friday (July 10). The Italian star earned his revenge against Djokovic at Wimbledon, having lost to the 39-year-old at the Australian Open in January. This is Sinner’s first Grand Slam final of the year.
Sinner has struggled in Grand Slam tournaments this season, and he’s hoping to end that at the All England Club by defending his Wimbledon title. However, Pat Cash believes that there’s a way to stop Sinner from achieving that. He revealed on BBC Sports that Zverev needs to rely heavily on his service technique to get the better of the World No.1 on the court:
And Zverev’s serve is phenomenal as we know. He’s going to get a few more free points. I don’t know if he’s going to win, but if there’s any way he’s got a chance of breaking this hoodoo that Sinner’s got over him, it’s here. Because he’s going to smash a few winners. He’s going to have to be aggressive. The serve of Zverev, it comes down. That’s where he really damaged Fery today. Even Novak’s got a great serve, but it’s a different ball game for Sinner on the grass.
Zverev has won 13 consecutive Grand Slam matches and has won 20 of his last 21 matches on tour. En route to the final, World No.3 defeated Taylor Fritz, who had beaten Zverev five consecutive times on tour. However, Sinner will be the first player Zverev will face in the last four weeks who is ranked higher than him on tour.
Alexander Zverev told to make Jannik Sinner work hard at the Wimbledon final
Alexander Zverev has not defeated Jannik Sinner in almost three years. The last time the German star got the better of Sinner was at the US Open in 2023. Since then, Sinner has won their last nine meetings and now leads Zverev 10-4 in their head-to-head record. Also, he has already beaten Zverev four times this season.

Sinner is the overwhelming favorite to win the Wimbledon final, but Zverev can cause an upset. During the aforementioned conversation, Pat Cash highlighted that Zverev needs to make Sinner work hard on the court, in some ways push sets to a tiebreak, which will make the Italian star drop some free points:
If he can just stay in touch. Zverev’s tie-break record is unbelievable, he’s the tie-break master. Get to the tie-break of the first set and hope to pull it out to have a real chance. He doesn’t want to be going down two sets to love to Sinner. Even one set to love for that matter.
Daniil Medvedev revealed after losing to Sinner that one way to beat the World No. 1 is to play long rallies against him on the court. Carlos Alcaraz often uses that technique and has deployed it perfectly on many occasions. Nonetheless, Medvedev said the disadvantage of that tactic is that the player might tire before beating Sinner.
