Juan Carlos Ferrero is currently a free agent in tennis after parting ways with Carlos Alcaraz in December. The former French Open champion recently revealed that he’s open to coaching Jannik Sinner if the opportunity arrives despite having a good partnership with Alcaraz for seven years on tour.
Ferrero and Alcaraz’s split has been a major talking point in tennis since they both announced their split in December. Alcaraz’s collaboration with Ferrero began in 2018, when the former was just 16 years old. Alcaraz had not yet made his professional debut in tennis and was still under training at Ferrero’s academy in Villena.
Under the tutelage of Ferrero, Alcaraz claimed 24 singles titles, including six Grand Slams on tour. He also finished the year as World No.1 on occasion. Last year, as Alcaraz’s best season on tour, winning eight tour-level titles and won over 70 matches on the court. However, weeks after their split, Ferrero said in an interview that he’s open to taking new jobs.
The 45-year-old revealed last month that he will be coaching Spanish golfer Angel Ayora. He will be working on the mental aspect of the professional golfer. Also, he noted that he’s open to returning to the tour as a coach and didn’t rule out the possibility of coaching Sinner, who is currently being coached by Darren Cahill.
Cahill is currently 60 and might retire anytime soon. Last year was meant to be his final season in Sinner’s team, but he changed his mind after Sinner won the Wimbledon Championship. During a conversation on Off Court with Greg podcast, the former British No.1 Greg Rusedski revealed that he doesn’t see Ferrero becoming Sinner’s coach in the future:
I don’t think I see it happening as long as Darren Cahill is there. Because Darren Cahill is one of the best in the business. He’s done an incredible job with every player he’s been with. He’s taken Halep to number one, winning the Slam, he’s done it with Andre Agassi, he’s done it with Leyton Hewitt as a youngster, and now he’s doing it with Jannik Sinner. So maybe it’s an add-on, maybe they might get Ferrero as a consultant, but I don’t see him as the coach until Darren decides.
Cahill joined Sinner’s team in 2022 and has helped the Italian star become one of the best players on tour. Sinner has won four Grand Slams in his career and has a chance to complete a Career Grand Slam at the French Open. But he failed to defend his Australian Open title.
Greg Rusedski believes Juan Carlos Ferrero did an incredible job with Carlos Alcaraz
Juan Carlos Ferrero implemented a dynamic style of play in Carlos Alcaraz’s game, which has made him one of the best players of his generation. The Spanish coach, who once coached Alexander Zverev, polished Alcaraz’s game.

However, without Ferrero, Alcaraz completed his career Grand Slam at the Australian Open. Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open, becoming the youngest player to complete a Career Grand Slam. During the aforementioned conversation, Greg Rusedski noted that Ferrero did an incredible job of making Alcaraz become the player he is today:
I really like him as a person and I like him as a coach. He was with Sascha Zverev, let’s not forget that as well, who is the third-best player on the planet. He just was not feeling as though he was getting enough out of that relationship; he parted company, and he ended up with Carlos Alcaraz doing an incredible job.
Ferrero coached Zverev from 2017 to 2018, but the two parted ways due to a disagreement. After Ferrero decided to coach Alcaraz and stuck with the 22-year-old for seven years, helping him win several titles on the court.
