The Wimbledon Championships is around the corner and discussions about who is going to win this time have started. Former British No.1 Laura Robson picked Jannik Sinner ahead of Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles, while in the women’s category, she feels either Ons Jabeur or Aryna Sabalenka will win it.
Alcaraz recently became the Roland Garros champion for the first time and was considered a heavy favorite for Wimbledon as well, given that he won the title last year by beating seven-time champion Novak Djokovic. But the Spaniard failed to defend his title in the ongoing Queen’s Club Championships by losing to British No.1 Jack Draper in the second round. Sinner, on the other hand, has made it to the Halle Open quarterfinals after two back-to-back three-set matches.
I am going with Jannik Sinner. He made the semis last year and is now the World No.1, and I feel like Carlos Alcaraz doing it back-to-back will be even harder.Laura Robson told The Telegraph
Robson did not go for Djokovic either, who, at another time, would have been the top favorite. The former British No.1 called Djokovic an “unknown” player because of his injuries and a slump in form. In the women’s category, Robson picked Jabeur and Sabalenka ahead of Iga Swiatek and last year’s champion Marketa Vondrousova.
Ons Jabeur. Well, my heart says Ons, but my head says Aryna Sabalenka. I don't think Iga Swiatek is quite ready to do it. Though I love the fact she flew to Liverpool to watch Taylor Swift and cried when she got a note from Taylor.Laura Robson added
After her third consecutive and overall fourth Roland Garros triumph, Swiatek received a handwritten letter from Taylor Swift, who invited the Pole to one of her Eras Tour concerts. Swiatek, who is a Wimbledon quarterfinalist (reached last year), withdrew herself from the ongoing Berlin Open due to fatigue.
Here’s how Ons Jabeur, Aryna Sabalenka, and Jannik Sinner performed at the Wimbledon Championships
Ons Jabeur is a two-time Wimbledon finalist, having reached the summit clash in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, she succumbed to a three-set defeat to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, while in 2023, she lost to Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets.
Aryna Sabalenka, who won her maiden Grand Slam title at this year’s Australian Open, is a two-time Wimbledon semifinalist. She advanced to the last four in 2021 and 2023, losing to Karolina Pliskova and Jabeur respectively.
Jannik Sinner did his best when he reached the semifinal last year and lost to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. At the SW19, he will be aiming for his second Grand Slam title, having clinched his maiden trophy at this year’s Australian Open.
