Spanish tennis legend Alex Corretja has been surprised by Rafael Nadal‘s decision to skip the upcoming Laver Cup edition in Berlin. The Spaniard withdrew from the team event earlier this week, with Grigor Dimitrov named as his replacement.

Nadal hasn’t played any ATP event since losing in both singles and doubles at the Paris Olympics. His last official match was a straight-set defeat to Novak Djokovic in the second round of the Olympic singles.

I was really surprised because I thought the Laver Cup was a more relaxed competition, although once they’re there, the teams always want to win, but you can play singles or doubles, it can be adapted more to what you need.
Alex Corretja said in an interview to Eurosport

Nadal has had a disappointing 2024 season, with a 12-7 win-loss record. It is the first time in his career that he has gone a full season without winning a Grand Slam match.

In fact, Nadal’s only Grand Slam appearance was at Roland Garros, where he lost in the first round to eventual finalist Alexander Zverev. The left-hander has reached only one ATP final this year, which came at the Bastad Open.

Carlos Alcaraz presents Rafael Nadal with an ideal retirement storyline

Carlos Alcaraz has given Rafael Nadal a great chance to finish his career on a high. Spain has qualified for the Davis Cup Finals, which will be held in Malaga this November.

Alcaraz was tired after his surprising early exit at the US Open. Despite this, he quickly returned to the court, accepting a call-up from Spain’s Davis Cup captain, David Ferrer. He won his match against Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-3 in front of a supportive crowd in Valencia.

There’s now speculation that Nadal could join the Spanish team for the Davis Cup Finals. The tennis legend has faced rumors about retiring soon, especially with no current plans to play in other events. He recently announced that he isn’t ready to compete in the upcoming Laver Cup in Berlin.

Nadal’s final years have been plagued by injuries, leading many to believe he might retire soon. Some even thought he would announce it at the Laver Cup, as Roger Federer did in 2022. There were reports that Nadal had spoken to his great rival, but he won’t play in Berlin due to fitness concerns.

If Nadal joins Spain for the Davis Cup in November, it could be a fitting end to his career. The Finals are expected to be packed with big tennis names like Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zverev, and Jannik Sinner. It could be a memorable event for both the Spanish legend and his fans.
