Former World No.11 Sam Querrey slapped with a big fine after committing ‘major offence’ at St.Petersburg Open
Sam Querrey is a former Wimbledon semi-finalist who is currently ranked at 53 in the charts. There was a six-month break in place due to the spread of coronavirus in 2020. Soon after the resumption of the ATP Tour, the American was caught in a whirlwind of controversies.
Querrey was slated to contend against Denis Shapovalov at the St. Petersburg Open on 14 October, 2020. However, the former violated a protocol that was in place by the Russian health authorities.
After being tested positive for Covid-19, the World No.53 failed to commit himself to the mandated quarantine. Further, he fled from Russia with his wife and infant on a private jet.
Following the weight of the charges and Sam’s conduct, the ATP has deemed his actions to be in violation of the ATP Code of Conduct under the Player Major Offence provision. Further, the governing body of men’s tennis has now concluded its investigation into the protocol breach committed by Querrey.
Details of the actions taken against Querrey
The 33-year-old has been fined U.S $20,000 for his breach. However, the men’s body has added that this charge can be declared null. This will happen if Querrey doesn’t commit a similar offence in the duration of his probationary period of six months.
Furthermore, the ATP released a statement on the situation. It said, “Taking into consideration Mr. Querrey’s many years of otherwise good standing with the ATP. And other mitigating factors, the fine is suspended and will be lifted subject to Mr. Querrey committing no further breaches of health and safety protocols related to COVID-19 within a probationary six-month period. The player has five days to appeal the decision, should he choose to do so.”
In addition, Sam retains the liberty to challenge this decision if he wishes to do so.
