Antonio Giovinazzi the former Alfa Romeo driver has recently given his verdict on the switch from Formula1 to Formula E after spending three years in formula1. He is relishing the opportunity of driving a Formula E car after his contract was not renewed by the Ferrari sister team, Alfa Romeo.
It has been stated in racingnews365 that Antonio Giovinazzi believes the change to the Formula E for the 2022 season is not going to be an insignificant one. In his opinion, the challenge of driving a Formula E car is very different compared to the challenge he was facing in Formula1 for the last three years.
Antonio Giovinazzi beleives the Gen2 cars are very different from the Gen1 Formula E cars
The former Alfa Romeo driver has experience of driving a Formula E car as he drove one in 2018 and recently during the 2021 Formula1 season he had the opportunity of driving one for the Dragon Pensek Formula E team. He drove the car in the 2-day testing program in valencia.
He has admitted that the Gen2 cars are very different from the Gen1 that he drove in 2018. In Antonio’s opinion, the handling of the E-car is very different compared to a Formula1 car. During his interview, he quoted “This[Gen2 car] for sure is better, but I was expecting it to be a little more easy. It was really complicated in terms of braking.”
He has also stated the fact that driving a Formula E car feels like driving a Formula1 car in the rain. He talked about his first day at testing and said “I remember the first day I was completely lost. I just needed to put some new inputs into my mind because it is a car in terms of balance and everything, I never drove before.”
He further added that in Formula E you have to brake softly and you cannot carry a lot of speed into the corners as there is no grip and downforce in play in Formula E.
He has admitted that he is still not 100 percent in sync with the car but is adamant that this is the kind of challenge that he likes. With Formula1 behind him for the time being, he would be looking to do a strong season for Dragon Penske with the hope of making it back to Formula1 sometime in the future.
