Daniel Ricciardo Recalls Iconic On-Track Moment Against ‘God of the Sport’ Michael Schumacher

There are a handful of drivers only who have witnessed the supremacy of both Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher at different moments, Daniel Ricciardo is one amongst the few. The Australian driver not only has deemed the German seven-time World Champion as the ‘God of the Sport’ but also revealed one of his most memorable moments in the early days when he raced against him.

Before Michael Schumacher finally retired in 2012, his glimpses with Mercedes saw him lock horns with a young Daniel Ricciardo who seems in awe of the former driver as the duo locked horns o a particular occasion. Mentioning how he gets goosebumps just to think of that moment, Ricciardo spoke highly about the seven-time World Champion on a recent occasion.

“To know I was once in the same field of drivers as Michael Schumacher in Formula 1 is amazing for me,” said Ricciardo during an interview with Sport Bild“I remember one of my first races at Suzuka, I had a short duel with him. It was like a game of cat and mouse on the track. That was really unreal. I enjoyed every second. Michael had already won seven world titles. He is the god of this sport.”

He added, “After the race, my father took me aside for a moment, talking about the duel. He said ‘do you have any idea what just happened?’ I had to let that sink in first. When I’m older, I’ll think back to moments like that. My god, now that I tell it I just get goosebumps again.”

Now that Ricciardo is locking horns against Hamilton, who seems to be on the verge of breaking the world record of the driver the Australian regards as the ‘God’ of this sport, it is highly commendable to see how there is sheer respect shared for one another in this highly competitive sport. And specially the mark left by Michael Schumacher.
