Sergio Perez and Red Bull have been in complete consonance in regards to the opinion against the dismissal of the then race director Michael Masi, who was put under tremendous amount of pressure at the climacteric to deliver the right call. The consequence of the decision was Red Bull and Max Verstappen pipping Hamilton for the driver’s title in the last lap of the race.

Max Verstappen might have won the championship but he wouldn’t have been able to do it without the efforts and support of Sergio Perez. Perez defensive work against Lewis Hamilton brought down to with two seconds which was hovering around the 10 second mark.

Max Verstappen appreciated the efforts of the Mexican during the race on the team radio when he said, “Checo is a legend,” to which the crew replied, “An absolute animal.

In the same grand prix, Michael Masi got it horribly wrong and in a way gifted the championship to the current world champion Max Verstappen. But we need to understand that the race director was under immense pressure by both camps and with the world watching the race and hearing the conversation. In such a scenario, anybody could have made a mistake and he did too and had to pay for it heavily, which might not have been the right thing to do.

Sergio Perez agreed with his Team Principal Christian Horner and this thought. Perez said, “Never in the history of Formula 1 has a race director been so widely publicized. The pressure on him is incredible. I think we were possibly wrong there. Possibly we didn’t give him the support he needed at the time.”

“FIA should have done more to defend Masi against the enormous pressure from outside. The death threats that the Australian even received show that Masi certainly should have received more help from the FIA,” As reported by gpblog.

The decision might be fair or unfair but we need to understand that receiving death threats for a mistake is utter nonsense. Formula 1 is just a sport and any sport with a human touch has that room for errors and we as fans need to understand that. It doesn’t set the right example for the successor as there will always be that fear of ousting if any decision goes wrong, which isn’t healthy.
