Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won a hard-fought battle to win the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The Dutchman finished the race just half a second ahead of the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc giving fans an opportunity to witness a rare Photofinish in Formula One. But Mclaren on Lando Norris and Alpine of Esteban Ocon too shared a much closer finish.

Esteban Ocon fended off McLaren’s Lando Norris for P6 by just 0.107 seconds. The Frenchman and the Brit made multiple manoeuvres on each other leading up to the last lap of the race.

Lando pulled up right behind the Alpine of Ocon after the last corner of the Jeddah Corniche. Having been in the DRS activation region, he took the slipstream, and raced full throttle, but was unable to pass him before the finish line.

Not just the drivers at the front of the grid, even backmarkers and midfield cars are enjoying the new cars and the increased opportunities. Alpine’s Esteban Ocon claimed he won the battle for P6 because he could fend off Mclarens Lando Norris in the new machinery.

The Frenchman said, “If he would have been in this year’s car, I would have not been able to get him back. But you can follow so much easier now. I managed to use the DRS in the last lap to get him back.” To which Norris jokingly replied, “I know it sucks, I hate the new rules!”

He added, “No It is good, it’s good for us. I heard about his race with Fernando earlier in the race and even the battle between Max and Charles. I think a lot of it is because of the new cars. You can follow a lot closer, you can get into DRS and also when you pass it is also easier for the car to come back at you and have another go at you.”

Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc were separated by just half a second in the 2022 Saudi Arabian GP, the closest winning margin since the 2020 Italian GP. Close racing is a result of the new regulations implemented by Formula One to improve racing.
