“It’s really fun to drive,” Max Verstappen confirms new Formula One cars no longer ‘uncontrollable.’

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen clinched his first Formula One Drivers Championship title in 2021. The Dutchman won the title after an epic duel with Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton whom he overtook in the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi to claim his maiden title.
The Dutchman will be looking to defend his Championship crown in a year of big changes. Ahead of the 2022 Formula One season, new regulations were imposed. The cars built under these changes are much different from the ones fans have seen in the Turbo Hybrid era.
Despite the claims that the new cars are unstable and slightly off the pace, Verstappen believes the new cars are much easier and fun to drive in. He stated that racing in the new cars will be fun and cars are no longer unbalanced when following another car.

Max Verstappen calls 2022 cars “more predictable and controllable”

The 2022 regulations changes were aimed at improving the racing element of the sport. The changes were focused on the new 18-inch tyres, aerodynamics, monocoque and power units of the car. Formula One’s focused on reducing ‘dirty air’ of cars which reduced the overtaking opportunities for following drivers and made their cars unstable. According to Max Verstappen, the new cars are much better at racing and are more in control during racing conditions.
“I do think it is better,” Verstappen commented on Saturday after his testing run in Bahrain. “It’s at least better than last year when if you got behind someone, you suddenly got understeer or a lot of oversteer. It was uncontrollable. When I’m behind a car now, I do notice that I’m losing downforce, but that happens front and rear. So that makes it more predictable and controllable for drivers.”
Verstappen added “These cars are a lot slower in the slow corners because they are a lot heavier. On a track with a lot of slow corners, it will be less fun for us to drive. But if we go to circuits with a lot of fast corners, it really is a fun car to drive.”
The previous generation of cars were notoriously hard to follow in close racing conditions. The wake of the cars added massive turbulent dirty air which made the car behind unstable. This restricted close racing which the sport is well known for. With the new regulations, fans can expect more close Wheel-to-wheel racing.
