Kimi Raikkonen named team principal of Kawasaki in MXGP

Kimi Raikkonen the 2007 Formula1 world champion who said goodbye to the sport at the end of the 2021 season has taken up a new position at the Kawasaki team in MXGP.

As per racer, the Kawasaki Racing Team has appointed Kimi Raikkonen as their team principal for the 2022 season of the FIM Motorcross World Championship. Kimi is going to partner with Antti Pyrhonen who is the manager of the team. The duo has entered the Kawasaki’s in the past but now with Kimi being retired from Formula1 is willing to give more time to the factory-backed effort.

While talking about his move, Kimi has said “It’s no secret that, for me, one of my great passions in life for many years has been motocross but this team is not what you might call a hobby; it’s very serious, very focused and we aspire to be the best we possibly can.”

Now, I have retired from racing I will be able to spend more time on this project; not on the daily issues but more from a strategic point of view using my experience of how teams work and what creates success on the world stage.”

Kimi started his Formula1 career in 2001 and managed to become a World Champion with Ferrari in 2007. Kimi won a total of 21 races during his career and managed to get on the podium an impressive 103 times.

The last stint that Kimi had in Formula1 before retiring was with the Ferrari sister team Alfa Romeo for whom he raced from 2018 to 2021. In his last season in Formula1 Kimi finished 16th in the standings by scoring 10 points.
