Alfa Romeo has caused a stir in the Formula 1 community of their car, and it is not in terms of its performance, as insiders recently revealed to Autosport that the unique, serrated floor displayed at the car launch earlier this year was a phony design. At the launch event in Zurich, the team presented its new 2023 challenger, which featured a series of fins along the edge of the floor in the launch renders. However, during a shakedown test in Barcelona, the floor was entirely different and significantly more conventional.

Numerous theories had circulated regarding the design, with some speculating that Alfa Romeo was waiting to unleash the floor later in the season. In contrast, others believed that the team had abandoned the concept early in development. However, it has now been officially confirmed that the serrated floor was entirely bogus and was a deliberate move by the team to mislead its rivals.

The unusual design concept had sparked intense speculation among Formula 1 experts, spectators, and around the paddock. The team had used a floor with nine individual flaps, dubbed the serrated floor, which raised many eyebrows. Surprisingly, the concept was legal regarding the FIA regulations, and its legality had increased curiosity around it.

But it became clear during the Bahrain opener that the team had abandoned the serrated floor design, prompting questions in the F1 community. However, a recent source told Autosport that the floor concept was a ploy to distract Alfa Romeo’s competitors. The team kept the secrecy of their real floor design hidden and used the serrated floor to create confusion and uncertainty among their rivals.

Alfa Romeo had a very decent showing at the season opener, with both the drivers qualifying in 12th and 13th, and come race day, the team managed to score points, with Valtteri Bottas finishing in 8th. The team will be fighting at the upper mid-field this season.

Alfa Romeo’s use of a fake floor design is an example of the gamesmanship and strategy involved in Formula 1. The team’s ability to keep its actual floor design hidden from its rivals is a testament to the lengths teams will go to gain an advantage. While the use of a fake design may seem sneaky, it is just one of the many tactics used in the world of motorsports. Fans will be eagerly watching to see what other surprises Alfa Romeo has in store for the 2023 season.
