Former Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has advocated that Christian Horner, the current Red Bull chief, take on a high position in F1. Horner has been Red Bull’s CEO since 2005, and the team has won multiple titles under his direction. Ecclestone, who oversaw the sport for nearly four decades before leaving in 2016, feels Horner is the appropriate person to lead F1 into the future.

In a recent interview, Ecclestone said: “If you had to pick anyone today, I’d say he [Horner] would be as good as there is. He listens well. He sorts out what’s rubbish from what isn’t.” Ecclestone’s endorsement of Horner as a potential F1 boss comes as the sport looks to build on the success of recent years.

Ecclestone also had some criticism for the current F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali, which Liberty Media appointed to replace Ecclestone himself. Ecclestone said: “Stefano has never been any closer to things beyond the fact that he once worked for Ferrari. Apart from that, he didn’t know what happened behind the scenes. I never had somebody besides me. I wasn’t a teacher. I didn’t ever intend to be.

Ecclestone’s remarks are not without controversy, and Domenicali has already proven to be a strong leader in his short tenure at the helm of Formula One. Nonetheless, it is evident that Ecclestone still wields considerable power in the sport, and his remarks should not be dismissed lightly.

Horner, for one, has been involved with Formula One since Red Bull purchased the Jaguar F1 team in 2004 and made their debut the following season. Red Bull has been one of the most successful teams in the sport under his leadership, with Max Verstappen winning multiple driver’s world championships and the constructors’ title in 2022 for the first time since 2013.

Despite his achievements, it is uncertain if Horner would be interested in becoming CEO. In a recent interview on the Diary of a CEO podcast, he said: “When I get to the end of my journey, I’ll go away and do something completely different – I’ll be a sheep farmer or something like that. But I don’t see that in sight at the moment.

However, Bernie Ecclestone’s recommendation that Christian Horner takes up a prominent position in Formula One is a big advance in the sport. While Ecclestone’s words may have sparked some debate, his impact on the sport cannot be overstated. Horner has shown to be an excellent leader at Red Bull, but it is uncertain if he would want to take on the CEO post. F1 is an ever-changing sport, and it will be interesting to see how this story evolves in the next months and years.
