“Updates are coming for Imola,” Helmut Marko says Red Bull focusing on key updates but car still ‘way too heavy’

Helmut Marko witnessed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc claim his second victory of the season within the first two races of the 2022 Formula One Career. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez finished second. Meanwhile, George Russell claimed his first podium finish as a Mercedes driver as the Briton finished 3rd in the race.

The Monagesque started the race in Pole Position ahead of the Red Bull of Max Verstappen. But the Dutchman retired in the 40th lap of the race after a power unit failure. He was asked to stop the car on track after smoke was seen escaping the rear of his RB18.

Red Bull’s chief advisor, Helmut Marko was clearly frustrated with the result but says the team is working to bring upgrades to its car for Round 4 in Imola. According to the Austrian, the RB18 is still ‘way too heavy’ due to the delay in the development of the car.

Helmut Marko: “We are currently more than ten kilos heavier than Ferrari”

Helmut Marko was definitely not impressed with the results at Melbourne. Max Verstappen retired in the 40th Lap from 2nd position and could have challenged Leclerc if his Red Bull had allowed him to do so. But there seems to be a power unit failure and this is concerning to many at Red Bull. The DNF was Red Bull’s 3rd and Max’s second this season. But Marko believes the problem lies in the weight of the car.

Marko told De Telegraaf, “Our car is way too heavy. The RB18 finished late, as we were in the title race right through to the end last year. Updates are coming for the upcoming race at Imola and the Grand Prix after. Hopefully, we can get closer to Ferrari then. We are currently more than ten kilos heavier than Ferrari. In terms of lap time you are already talking about a loss of three tenths.”

According to Marko, there was already a fuel problem before the race, but that was solved. Red Bull will look to cut their deficit to Ferrari in the Constructors championship. The Scuderia lead the championship with more than 50 points separating them and Red Bull, who are in 3rd place behind Mercedes.
