Ahead of the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, Mercedes showed a lack in pace and the W13 looked unstable battling porpoising. CEO and Team Principal Toto Wolff had compared that the Silver Arrows were behind their rivals at Red Bull and Ferrari.
But Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton, joined the two Ferrari Drivers in an unexpected 3rd place podium, following Red Bull’s failure to finish the race. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc won the race after starting from pole position. His teammate Carlos Sainz finished the race in the second position.
Wolff says despite the persistent issues regarding pace and bouncing of the car, the team was “punching above our weight class.” The Austrian is also not focusing on the title race and says the team are working on making the W13 more competitive for the season ahead.

Hamilton started the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix fifth on the starting grid behind both the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers. Mercedes. But Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez suffered technical issues and could not finish the race. Toto Wolff rejoiced the unlikely podium and said his team will be happy to grab any opportunity on their way.
Toto Wolff said, “Today we were punching above our weight class, with the Red Bulls DNF-ing. At the moment we are fifth and sixth on the track, and we are trying to recover ground but it is not going to come from one day to the other – we’ll keep pushing.”
Wolff was pessimistic when asked about the chance of Mercedes being in the fight for either the drivers’ or constructors’ championship in 2022. He believes it’s “too early to look at the championship” and is happy to take the season race-by-race. The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix takes place on March 25-27.
