“With two rookies you don’t have a chance!” Franz Tost advocates using a balanced approach contrary to Hass
AlphaTauri
Franz Tost the AlphaTauri team principal has recently shared his opinion on why it has become essential in Formula1 to have at least one experienced in the team.
It has been stated in FORMEL1 that as per AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost the times have changed dramatically over the last decade and teams no longer have the liberty to send in two rookies to start a Formula1 season.
He believes the gaps especially between the mid-field teams have kept on decreasing year by year and with the budget constraints, the gaps are only going to shrink further in the coming years.
“In today’s Formula 1, it’s a big challenge to compete with two inexperienced drivers, and in the Constructors’ Championship you’re immediately at the bottom,” warns Tost.
During the 2021 Formula1 season, the Hass Formula1 team was the only team that started two rookies in the same year with Nikita Mazepin and Micheal Schumacher. AlphaTauri which was previously known as ToroRosso used to apply the same method. But with time things have changed and Tost believes “With two rookies you don’t have a chance to be in the middle or at the top.”
Franz Tost feels in Formula1 its all about the fine margins
The AlphaTauri team boss while talking about the compact battle in the midfield has said “The field is way too competitive, it’s too strong. If you look at qualifying times, it’s all about hundredths of a second. I think in Saudi Arabia Pierre (Gasly) was 0.087s behind (Charles) Leclerc, that’s 78 centimeters or so, and that ended up being two positions.”
“And if you have a young driver, an inexperienced one, then it’s about tenths, not thousandths.” knows the AlphaTauri team boss and explains why AlphaTauri 2021 broke with its tradition and decided to have an experienced driver with Pierre Gasly to use alongside youngster Yuki Tsunoda.
Tost believes it is the right approach going into the future and has said “I think that the combination with an experienced driver (and a rookie) is better.“
While talking up the importance of having an experienced driver Tost has however also said that in their role as a development team for Red Bull, they will continue to promote young talent. “Of course, if there is a very well-trained young driver, Scuderia AlphaTauri is always able and willing to train a young driver,” said Tost.
AplhaTauri finished sixth in the constructor’s championship in 2021 and has decided to extend the contract of both Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly for the 2022 Formula1 season despite the rookie having a horrendous first season.
Franz Tost has previously said that Tsunoda’s first year was a fantastic example of a rookie season that looked worse than it was. He believes during the 2022 Formula1 season Tsunoda’s future is in his own hands.
